2019 MAP Testing at SMS

South Middle School will begin the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) testing for 6th-8th grade students beginning May 6th, 2019. Testing is scheduled to take place Monday, May 6th through Friday, May 17th and is designed to assess students’ progress toward mastery of educational standards. Students in the state of Missouri are assessed in the areas of communication arts (grades 3-8), mathematics (grades 3-8), and science (grades 5 and 8). Additionally, some 8th graders will take the Algebra I End of Course Exams.

Results of the MAP tests provide both you and the school with information on how your child is developing, and we want all students to show what they know. MAP scores are also one measure to help us determine appropriate course scheduling.  Parental support is vital in the motivation of our students, and by working together I am confident our students will do their best. Thank you for your help during this testing season.

Tips on How to End the School Year Successfully
It is hard to believe spring is already here and we are in our final two months of the school year.  Spring fever can often make it a hard time for students to finish the school year strong. We are hoping the following video will help you help your child finish the school year with success.

Finish the Year Strong

Learning can occur in many avenues, and what a better way to foster a positive learning experience than to make it functional and fun. At South Middle School, we have been fortunate to offer a new experience this year for both our students and staff. Mustang Mugs is a coffee shop in which students gather orders from staff members, fulfill those orders, and then deliver the finished product.  It is an opportunity for community building while also increasing social skills and functional academics.  The start of Mustang Mugs has allowed students to open their eyes to new possibilities, new skills, and new friendships.  We are fortunate to have this experience and can't wait to watch Mustang Mugs evolve in the years to come.
2019 Grow Your Own Teacher 5K

Ready to hit the trail for a cause? Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 27 for the Fort Zumwalt Grow Your Own Teacher 5K & Fun Run. You can run or walk, either way it's a great way to get out there with friends and family and support the Fort Zumwalt Education Foundation, which funds the Grow Your Own Teacher program. This program supports FZSD grads interested in becoming special education or high school math, science, foreign language or industrial tech teachers. Through an application and interview process, students are selected and awarded assistance with college. In return, they teach in Fort Zumwalt after graduating college. Learn more:…

On April 5 the service club at South Middle School hosted a carnival themed dance for our students.  Students gathered with friends to welcome the spring season by playing games, singing karaoke, and dancing to our own DJ Dawson playing a variety of music. A great time was had by all!
